Before proceeding with our regular update, we would like to make an announcement -

For quite some time now, we have steadily been getting enquires regarding online music lessons. Due to lack of time for this, Uma has not been able to take this up previously. However, we are glad to announce that Uma is able to accept a limited number of students now and those who are interested may get in touch with Uma. Please email Raga Surabhi, with a subject "online music lessions". There is really no prerequisite for this, except a strong interest in carnatic music and a serious desire to devote time for this :)

Moving on to this week's update, we have the next episode of Laya Lahiri, Tarang - 7 in which Suri demonstrates the various aspects of 'Thisra Nadai'.  We hope you find his explanations and mridangam demonstrations enjoyable!

We are happy to be back with yet another update.

This week, we have a new raga, Bhoopalam, for you. Bhoopalam is a very pleasing morning raga with very close resemblances to ragas Bowli and Revagupthi.  Alright, yes.........we have to do the comparison episodes, will surely take it up in the coming weeks :)

For those rasikas, who have postponed taking the Week 125 - Special Quiz, please do take it right away! We have barely a couple of more days to go...the deadline for receiving the answers is 31/Jan/2012.

Dear Rasikas,

Hope you all had a great start to 2012!  We have a new raga this week - Natabhairavi - 20th Melakartha raga, the shuddha madhyama equivalent of the more popular Shanmughapriya.  Natabhairavi has given rise to several popular janya ragas like, to name a few, bhairavi, anandhabhairavi, abheri, that are more popular than the parent.  That is also a reason for taking up this raga only now.  

On the laya segment, Shri. Suriyanarayanan starts his demonstrations of various talas with chathusra nadai, adi talam.

This week we are happy to introduce a new raga to our rasikas - Varamu.  Varamu can be described as Hindolam with D2 instead of D1 or Sriranjani without R2.  Do listen to it and post your feedback as always.

Happy to note that some of our rasikas have been posting their views on the concerts that they have listened to.  Please do send it to us or post  your comments in the blog.

We are happy to be back with a new raga this week, Sumanesa Ranjani, which can be roughly described as a prati madhyama scale of Suddhadhanyasi.  Though it is a rare raga, because this is a long pending rasika request, we decided to address it this week.

Hope you will listen to Sumanesa Ranjani in the thukkada segment during the season this year!.  Now that the concerts are in full swing, we request Raga Surabhi rasikas to spread the word around about the site to fellow concert rasikas.

We are happy to be back with the update for this week.  We have the next episode of Laya Lahiri, 'Tarang - 5' in which Suri talks in detail about the important laya terms commonly heard in concert circles.  Please do take time to listen to his konnakol demonstrations, we are sure you would find them very enjoyable.  

Those rasikas who had got Panthuvarali instead of Poorvikalyani in last week's quiz might want to listen to our comparison episode posted in week 27 :)
