          Appreciating Ragas

Rasikas who have not been formally trained in Carnatic music, at times find it a challenge to identify ragas.  Every raga has a unique identity as defined by its arohanam and avarohanam. A raga can be easily estabhlished by identifying certain key swara patterns that are commonly found to occur in respective keerthanas and raga alapanas.

For a general rasika, identifying ragas comes with a lot of listening.  Sometimes, we may be able to identify the pidis (nuances) of a raga and say that, it is similar to some other song, but not the name of the raga itself.

Hence this is an effort of few enthusiasts of Carnatic music to appeal to the general rasikas to become more aware of various ragas and learn the trick of raga identification.

As a first step, we have a set of ragas for which there are audio files for Arohanam-Avaroham, Signature, Carnatic and Cinema songs. The Identifying Ragas page has links to the audio collection of various ragas.
